October 2022 - ʻAlawī in the ʻUmikoa

You might think that this is another ʻakikiki, but you think wrong! They have a lot of similarities from sounds, to behavior and even apearance and shape of their toungue, but ʻalawī are actually qite distantly related to the ʻakikiki. ʻAlawī have been doing pretty well on Hawaiʻi Island especially at the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, but the spread of mosquitoes is relentless, and these ʻakikiki copy cats are also in danger from climate change and mosquitoes.
