Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge is a special forest on the slopes of Maunakea that hosts the largest populations of ʻĀkepa. The refuge protects a large swath of the critical habitat that this endangered bird depends on for survival. Friends of Hakalau is a non-profit organization that supports the refuge and its efforts to protect the ʻākepa and the other forest brds of Hawaiʻi Island.
